Like any piece of art, our lighting should denote an idea to people and serve as something meaningful in their homes that they will enjoy. We create lighting that is exclusive but accessible – no museum pieces but special and unique products that contain a little of the identity of both the artisan and the customer. Our craftsmen are artists and the trust between them and Spiridon, the mutual exchange of knowledge and value, is at the heart of what we do.

At Mazloum Lights we are constantly innovating, because we find inspiration everywhere. Spiridon’s experience as a designer has been honed through experimenting with different techniques: replicating and crafting jewellery, the blowing glass of Lebanon and Syria, the pottery of Qena in Upper Egypt. Today Spiridon continues to actively seek inspiration. He walks around Cairo, savouring the vitality and beauty of the city, the architecture of Old Cairo, the influence of Egyptian and non-Egyptian design in Roxy, Dokki, Zamalek, Downtown, the stories of the people in Manshiet Nasser and Zawya. He visits the Museum of Islamic art and remembers trips to Andalucia. He incorporates aspects of the grandiose designs of Topkapi and Dolbamache, and the technique that he has seen employed in Europe of putting opulent lighting in strategic positions within bare interiors, to spectacular effect.

The beauty of form, proportion and geometry in Islamic art is something that Spiridon loves to employ as a mechanism of expression, through shape, through the interplay of light and dark patterns, through the use of materials and colour.

The vision of Mazloum Lights is to continue this process of inspiration, to create, diversify and showcase beautiful lighting, with influences from around the world. We dream of bringing designers of different backgrounds to produce in this space, to learn from our know-how and showcase their work – as a way of generating new ideas for them and for us, a university.

We also offer to our customers the opportunity to purchase something very personal by customising designs to their particular taste, playing with the height, form, shape, colour of a piece that speaks to them so it fully expresses their unique style.
